a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers - 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 "In fact, we were unfortunate!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
