A throng of the ancients 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
