A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
