The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who pray, 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
