The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who pray, 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Are free of blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
