The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
