The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
