The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
