In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you the (sleeping) enwrapped one! 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation. 4 Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
