The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
