The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
