The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 thy robes purify 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
