The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
