The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
