The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 thy robes purify 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he thought; 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
