Nay! By the moon 32 And by the night when it withdraws, 33 By the morning when it brighteneth. 34 Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes), 35 A warning to mortals, 36 Whoever of you desires to progress or lag behind. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 Except those on the right side. 39 who will be in Paradise 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 "what led you into hell?" 42 and they shall reply, "We were not among those who prayed; 43 and we did not feed the needy. 44 and we plunged along with the plungers, 45 And rejected the Day of Judgement as a lie 46 Till death overtook us. 47 So no intercession will avail them. 48 Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- 49 As they were frightened asses 50 running away from a lion? 51 Aye! every one of them desireth that: he should be vouchsafed scrolls expanded. 52 No indeed; but they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So, whoever wills, will remember it. 55 they will only take heed if God so wills: He is the Lord who is worthy to be feared: the Lord of forgiveness. 56
