He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 You pay full attention, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And whereas he fears, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
