He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and in awe of God 9 you ignore him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing and joyful, 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
