He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and fearfully, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and purified. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
