He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and in awe of God 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 exalted, purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 noble, pious. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 How We pour water in showers 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
