Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the break of Day 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 Enter then My garden." 30
