Dawn (Al-Fajr)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 And come into My Paradise! 30
