Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the daybreak, 1 and ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
