Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
