The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
