Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And enter into My garden. 30
