Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
