The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
