The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
