The Town (Al-Balad)

20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
