The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
