The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
