The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
