The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
