The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and rejects what is right, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
