The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
