The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Indeed your efforts differ. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
