The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call upon his henchmen! 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
