The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
