The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
