The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
