The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
