۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these idols to which you cling so passionately?" 52 They replied: 'We found our fathers worshipping them' 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They said: "Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?" 55 He said, 'Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who originated them, and I am one of those that bear witness thereunto. 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 He broke all the idols into pieces, except the biggest among them so that perhaps people would refer to it. 58 They said, “Who has done this to our Gods? He is indeed cruel!” 59 Some among them said, “We heard a youth speak ill of them – the one called Ibrahim.” 60 The others said: "Bring him, then, before the eyes of the people that they may see (what will be done to him)." 61 (On Abraham's arrival) they said: "Abraham, are you he who has done this to our gods?" 62 [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask them, if they can speak!" 63 Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are the unjust; 64 Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: "You know well that they do not speak." 65 [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship beside Allah. Do you have no sense?" 67 They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." 68 We said: O fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham, 69 They had sought to do evil to him, but We caused them to be the worst losers, 70 And We delivered him as well as Lut (removing them) to the land which We had blessed for all people. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac and, as an additional gift, (a grandson), Jacob, and We made righteous men of every one (of them). 72 And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). 73 And unto Lot we gave judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him from the community that did abominations. Lo! they were folk of evil, lewd. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
