A company of the former peoples 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
