The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
