The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A forelock that lies, is sinful. 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
