The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
