The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray, 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and guard their private parts 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
