The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
