The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise, and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 Purify your inner self, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he thought; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
